The Weekly Devotion for the Week of September 9

Sep 5, 2024

God’s word is our guide, our comfort, and our source of life.

In Matthew 4, Jesus is in the wilderness, alone and hungry.  Each of us has our own “wilderness” moments – times when we feel isolated, hungry for something more, and tempted by the world’s offerings.

The devil tempts Jesus to turn stones into bread, which would satisfy His physical needs.  The enemy wanted Jesus to focus on His immediate needs rather than trusting in God’s provision.

Jesus’ response teaches us that life is not sustained by physical needs alone.  While food, shelter, and other necessities are important, they are not enough to satisfy the deepest longings of our souls.  Just as our bodies need food, our spirits need sustenance from God’s word.

In our fast-paced world, we are often consumed by our daily needs and distractions.  We work hard to provide for ourselves and our families, but in doing so, we risk neglecting the spiritual nourishment that only God can provide.

God’s word is not just an ancient text; it is living and active.  It speaks to us today, providing wisdom, comfort, correction, and direction.  When we read the Bible, we are not just reading words on a page – we are receiving life-giving truth that has the power to transform our hearts and minds.

At the heart of Jesus’ response to the devil is trust in God’s provision.  Jesus was hungry, but He trusted that God would provide for His needs in His time.  He refused to take matters into His own hands, instead choosing to rely on His father.

May we seek His word daily, trust in His provision, and find our ultimate satisfaction in Jesus Christ.
