The Weekly Word - A Devotion for Easter Sunday

Apr 10, 2020

The Scripture for today is from Revelation 21:1-5

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. And these things are gone forever.” And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!”

This Sunday is Easter, the day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. Yet here we are, still living in a world of brokenness, illness, fear and suffering. In these days of uncertainty, this promise of a new heaven and a new earth feels like it can’t come soon enough.

These words from Revelation are God’s promise to us, and today especially, we hold onto this promise, trusting and knowing that God’s words to John are true. Someday we will make our home with God. He will be with us, not just in a fleeting feeling or moment – not just seen in a mirror dimly – but face to face, clearly and full present with us. We will feel His hand on our cheek as He brushes away our last tears. His presence will eradicate our sorrow, hopelessness and fear, once and for all.

This Sunday, as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Chris, let us remember His promise and cling to it with every fiber of our heart, mind and soul. The Lord is indeed making all things new, not just for a distant day in the future, but right now, in this very time and place.

Gracious God, I give thanks to You. I find my hope, my peace and my comfort in You. I trust that You are with me now, and that, even now, You are making everything new. Amen.
