The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of December 11

Dec 8, 2023

Be strong and courageous—the Lord will not leave you in the midst of life’s storms.

In Deuteronomy, Moses addresses the Israelites as they are about to embark on a new chapter of life.  They are set to enter the Promised Land, but there are many challenges and uncertainties ahead of them.  Moses wants to encourage the people to remember who they get their strength from.

“Be strong and courageous” is not a mere suggestion; rather, it is a command infused with authority from the Lord.  The phrase acknowledges the reality of fear and uncertainty while also challenging us to rise above those feelings.  As believers, our strength and courage do not originate from our own might—instead, they are rooted in our relationship with the ever-present and all-powerful God.

The verse also says, “Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you.”  The assurance that the Lord is with us can be a huge comfort to us.  In each step of our journey, in times of triumph and in the face of adversity, God’s presence is our constant companion.  We have a Father who never leaves our side.

Verse six ends with a beautiful promise:  “He will not leave you or forsake you.”  We do not have to do anything to earn this commitment; it is not based on our merit or performance.  In a world marked by uncertainty and instability, God’s promise stands as an anchor for our souls, offering security and hope.

Allow this verse and God’s promise to empower you and to live boldly for the glory of the Lord.
