The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of July 13

Jul 10, 2020

You make springs pour water into the ravines, so streams gush down from the mountains. They provide water for all the animals, and the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds nest beside the streams and sing among the branches of the trees. You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home, and you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor…Oh Lord, what a variety of things you have made!  – Psalm 104: 10-13 & 24

From the meadowlarks that sing among the grasses of the great plains to the rumble of thunder in the summer sky, from the starry curtain of the heavens to the roar of a glacial stream, God created everything on the face of the earth and beyond. What an infinite variety of things the Lord has made indeed!

And yet, this mighty God who is so powerful and so infinitely creative does not hesitate to tend to each of our unique, individual needs. Just as He provides rain on the mountains and streams in the ravines in this lyrical psalm, He sustains us when we thirst. He offers us strength, comfort and spiritual sustenance when our reserves run dry. He breathes life into our desiccated spirit, renewing our hearts, minds and souls with His everlasting love.

Today, let us rejoice alongside the psalmist. Let us celebrate God’s amazing creation – the birds, the grass, the trees, the sun, the moon, the dusk and the dawn – and let us celebrate the love He lavishes personally on each one of us. “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. I will praise my God to my last breath.” (104:33)

Lord God, You are so, so good to me. You – the One who created the whole universe itself – never forget me. You replenish my dry, weary spirit. You comfort me, filling me with hope and joy, quenching my thirst and satisfying my soul. I am humbled by Your relentless love, and I praise You with all that I am. Amen.
