The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of June 22

Jun 19, 2020

And yet, O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We are all formed by your hand. – Isaiah 64:8

Sometimes as we wrestle for control in our lives, we forget the God-established order. We forget that we are the created – the clay – while God is the Creator, the potter. The truth is, we resist being clay because, deep down, we don’t like the idea that we are not in charge. We want to mold and shape ourselves, and it can feel frightening to surrender, to allow God to mold us and shape us according to His vision for us.

While it’s hard to relinquish control, to be sure, there is also great freedom in doing so. The fact that God has formed us and shaped us in His image gives us confidence and reassurance. We can rest in faith and trust, knowing that God will guide us with a loving hand through the challenges and obstacles that threaten to derail us on the journey.

The key, of course, is to let ourselves be malleable in God’s hands – to let Him, the One who knows us best, shape us into who He desires us to be. God has known each one of us personally and intimately since before the beginning of time. We can take comfort in trusting that the Artist Himself has already formed and shaped us into the person we are and the person we continue to become.

Gracious God, forgive me for trying to wrestle control from Your hands. Today I yield to You, and I thank You for continuing to shape me into the person You envision and the person You desire me to be. Amen.
