The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of March 23

Mar 20, 2020

This week we are departing from our Lenten theme of repentance to offer a Word of hope in these uncertain times.

The Scripture for today is from Psalm 30: 1-3 & 5

I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me. O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health. You brought me up from the grave, O Lord. You kept me from falling into the pit of death…Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning.

Many of us are experiencing varying levels of anxiety and fear right now as we wait to see how the COVID-19 pandemic will unfold in the United States and in our own communities. Updates from health and government officials are coming at a mind-boggling pace, with new guidelines and restrictions every day. Many schools and businesses are closed, resulting in increased anxiety as we grapple with childcare challenges, financial hardships or unfamiliar remote work and classroom situations. Most of us are also feeling helpless and overwhelmed, as well as isolated from and concerned about our loved ones, friends and neighbors.

Now is a good time to pause, take a deep breath and remember that Jesus is near. Amid so much uncertainty, one thing always remains true: we have our hope in Christ.

This hope does not guarantee we will be free from suffering or discomfort. The fact is, God might not cure our ills or solve our problems in the way we desire, even when we ask Him to. But this hope does guarantee that we can have peace and joy even amid the most difficult circumstances. Our hope and faith in Jesus Christ reminds us that we have a Light in darkness, allowing us to walk forward in confidence and trust and with the knowledge that no matter what the outcome, He will be with us.

As we continue to navigate this uncertain time, let us turn to God in thanksgiving and praise, knowing that while weeping may last through the night, joy always comes with the morning. He will see us through; that’s a promise we can count on.

Gracious God, sustain me in this fearful, uncertain time. Renew my faith, hope and trust in You. Help me be strong and courageous and show me how I can best help others who are struggling. Above all, thank You for your presence, protection and unwavering love. Amen.
