The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of May 22

May 19, 2023

With God, anything is possible.

God doesn’t ask much of us to be a part of his kingdom. He paid the ultimate debt by sending his son to Earth to die for our sins so we can live in the hope of meeting Him someday in heaven.

One thing he asks us is to give up our worldly possessions so we may have treasure in heaven.

In the passage this verse is found, Jesus is talking to a rich ruler. The ruler inquires about getting into heaven. Jesus urges him to, “Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” The ruler does not want to give up his riches. In a way, the ruler idolizes money, which is still an issue in today’s age.

Jesus uses an interesting analogy in this passage, it reads, “For it is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” This has been translated in many ways, but they all have the same lesson: it’s difficult for a rich person to enter His kingdom.

The people who heard Jesus question whether or not the ruler can be saved, to which Jesus responds with verse 27. Jesus doesn’t want us to idolize our material things or our wealth, he wants us to focus on Him and His word.

Through Jesus, we are accepted into his kingdom and have eternal life.
