The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of May 8

May 5, 2023

Who do you turn to when faced with a hardship or your worries?

Isn’t it reassuring to know we have a God whom we can go to with anything? We don’t have to face life alone because our Father is watching over us and gives us the strength we need to complete each day.

This verse has a lot of imagery that has to do with strength; for example, “rock,” “fortress,” “shield,” and “stronghold.” In verse one of Psalm 18, David says, “I love you, O Lord, my strength.” He gives all the credit to God for his strength, and we can look at that and be inspired to do the same.

David also calls the Lord his “fortress.” Try to picture a fortress in your mind. Pretty big, right? A fortress is built with the intent to protect and keep people inside safe. David says he takes refuge in God like one would take refuge in a fortress during battle. This is how we can go about facing our daily battles. We can turn to God for a sense of peace and safety.

You might be wondering what “the horn of my salvation” means. A raised horn in the Bible often was a symbol of victory—in this case, victory over sin. God’s strength shines through when Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

Our hope today is to know that the same God who fought for David is the same God who continues to fight for us every day.
