Fox 42 Pack the Pantry Food Drive Stocks the Shelves at the Burrows Center

Mar 30, 2022

People from around the Omaha metro helped The Salvation Army Burrows Center stock its food-pantry shelves with nonperishables during the FOX 42 Pack the Pantry Food Drive on Saturday, March 26.

That morning, volunteers from PenFed Credit Union teamed up with staff from media partner FOX 42 KPTM to unload donations from cars and trucks that pulled into the Burrows Center parking lot.  From boxed dinners to pasta to canned goods and more, the donated pantry items will help local individuals and families who are experiencing food insecurity.  Between the donated food items that were gathered on Saturday and the online donations that also came in as part of this springtime event, it all added up to an amount of food sufficient to keep the pantry shelves fully stocked for two weeks—all during what’s been an unusually busy time for the Burrows Center.

Demand for food and other human services has been high over the last two years, and rising inflation is continuing to impact those who are living paycheck to paycheck.  In 2021 alone, the Burrows Center filled more than 5,200 grocery orders, ensuring those in need had adequate nutrition to fuel success at work and school.  More recently, demand for food at Burrows increased more than 24 percent between the winter of 2020-2021 and that of 2021-2022.

In addition to providing food, the Burrows Center also offers front-line social services, providing help with utility bill payments, prescription costs and material assistance.
