Winter Night Watch Volunteer Drivers Needed
Each weeknight in late November through early March, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team sends out two canteen trucks filled with hot meals and warm coats, gloves and hats for people in need.
Called the Winter Night Watch program, its goal is to take aid directly to people experiencing homelessness on the streets of Omaha. This season, the program runs through Friday, March 3.
A volunteer-driven program, Winter Night Watch regularly needs people to serve meals and hand out items – but it also needs volunteers to drive the canteens.
While servers can start right away, drivers must be vetted via background and driving record checks before they can participate.
“Depending on weather and time of year, we often need people to help in a variety of capacities, but we especially need drivers right now,” said Maria Moreno, Emergency Disaster Services/Service Extension Manager and Training Coordinator. “Because it takes a week or two to do the background and driving checks, drivers aren’t able to volunteer right away, so the need is ongoing.”
