A Summer that Means More: Empower Summer Day Camp

Jul 13, 2023

The sounds of laughter and play have filled the halls of Temple Corps and Tabernacle Corps recently. Our Empower Summer Day Camp is officially underway, and over 40 local children are enrolled in the 10-week program. Whether it’s learning about the ocean or experiencing archery for the first time, these campers are forging lasting friendships and gaining new life skills.

Held at two different locations, the days are filled with music, STEM learning, arts & crafts, and of course plenty of play! Team-building exercises are also incorporated each day to encourage camaraderie and build self-esteem.

On Mondays and Wednesdays, the groups come together for pool time at Harkins Aquatic Center, and a large group activity ends the week on Fridays. The camp counselors have plenty of adventures and field trips planned as well, including trips to Skateland, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, the Discovery Center, Torstenson Youth Conservation Education Center and more.

In partnership with Rockford Public School District 205, the summer camp was open to RPS students from K-8th grade. Lunch and snacks are provided each day at no cost to the families, and the program will run through August 25.

The Salvation Army is blessed to be part of an unforgettable summer for these children, and we hope to empower them with confidence and skills for years to come.
