Summer In the City Highlight: Ronnie's Story

Jul 21, 2020

Ronnie Samuel, age 61, was looking at an exceptionally large DTE bill without many options for repayment. Shortly before the coronavirus pandemic, he underwent a kidney transplant and was in the middle of recovery when COVID-19 cases began rising in the United States. He was off work from his security job, and before he could return, he tested positive for the virus.

Ronnie continued to social distance and quarantine under guidance from his medical professionals. However, the utility bills began accumulating, and he had little recourse. He ended up with a bill of about $4,000. Stressed, anxious, and uncertain, he contacted The Salvation Army Detroit Temple Corps Community Center for help. When the staff on the other end reassured him that everything would be taken care of, his worry melted away.

“She was very professional. She was helpful,” Samuel said. “The Salvation Army grabs you and pulls you back in. It was a huge help to me. It was awesome. I just want to thank them so much.”
