‘Here to Help’ radiothon raises $25,000+ for critical Salvation Army programs
Generous listeners of The Mission 980 AM and The Patriot 1280 AM raised $25,000-and-counting for The Salvation Army during a July 22 radiothon hosted by Salem Radio and sponsored by pharmacy company Geritom Medical.
The two-hour event, held at the Brooklyn Park Salvation Army, featured inspiring interviews with our staff members, volunteers, and the people we serve. (View photos.)
One of the guests, named Darlene, was interviewed about the help she received from The Salvation Army. In 2014, she came to The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in Minneapolis to turn her life around. She’d spent years in prison, decades using crack cocaine, and a lifetime trying to change.
“I started feeling different,” said Darlene (pictured below), recalling her experience at the Harbor Light Center. “I could look at myself in the mirror. I was coming back to myself.”
Darlene is now a different person. She has been sober for seven years, is married, and owns a home.
“So many amazing things are happening,” Darlene said. “If it weren’t for The Salvation Army, I wouldn’t be here.”
All donations raised during the “Here to Help” radiothon will support The Salvation Army’s ongoing efforts to provide food, shelter and care for thousands of Twin Cities residents still reeling from the pandemic.
During the past year, The Salvation Army has dispersed about $4 million worth of local assistance for rent, energy bills, transportation, and more. Additionally, our housing facilities continue to be a lifeline for those who’ve fallen on hard times. In Minnesota we operate 25 housing facilities that serve thousands of people and families, including 511 emergency shelter beds, 189 units of transitional housing, and 337 units of permanent housing.
