Goya Foods Gives 34,000 Pounds of Food to Salvation Army Pantries
Goya Food Inc.’s community-enrichment program Goya Gives recently lived up to its name by giving 34,000 pounds of food to The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division. This was part of the company’s donation of two million pounds of food to families across the country who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The local donation will be distributed throughout the Army’s more than two dozen food pantries in greater Chicagoland, northern Illinois, and northwestern Indiana to help meet the elevated need. Since the start of the pandemic, 200 to 500 percent more families and individuals have attended these food pantries compared to pre-COVID times.
“Our donation pays tribute to the dedication and hard work of 4,000 Goya employees,” said Bob Unanue, President of Goya Foods. “When the pandemic first struck, they rolled up their sleeves and worked 24/7 at the risk of their own health saying, ‘If we don’t do this, who will?’ That shows grit and courage, and I am so proud of our Goya family.”
Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S., specializes in Latin foods, including beans, sauces, rice, seasonings, and meat. Their donation of these and other staple foods to our pantries comes in time for our busy holiday season, when we will also be providing Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to our neighbors in need. Goya donated to The Salvation Army, as well as other organizations, because of our work and commitment to key communities in Hispanic areas.
“We are and will always be a company of passionate people who care about making a difference, and today we honor our promise to continue to help our communities in times of need,” Unanue said. The Salvation Army is grateful for this generous donation, which will help us Do the Most Good for our neighbors right when they need it most.
