The Salvation Army Provides Relief to Those Impacted by Widespread Flooding
Hundreds of Salvation Army volunteers, officers and staff are working throughout a nearly 200-mile-long corridor of the three-state Western Division as flooding continues to affect the area, but more volunteers are still needed.
In Omaha— Staff have set up a donation center at the old Canfield's near 84th & Center. Donations of flood cleanup and relief items such as shovels, masks, disinfectant, tarps, bottled water and sports drinks are being accepted. More volunteers are needed! Call 402-898-6050 to help.
In Fremont— While access to the town from the outside has been shut down, Salvation Army teams are there supporting local flood relief efforts—including providing pastoral care as needed. The Salvation Army is set to provide food and refreshments as well.
In Norfolk— Officers, staff and volunteers have been responding to needs both in Norfolk and in nearby communities, such as Osmond, where they provided approximately 250 meals and also distributed flood cleanup kits.
In Sioux City— Staff continue flood relief work in nearby communities; their work has included bringing toys to flood-affected families with children. They are also working to prepare a mobile food pantry to distribute food across a larger area around their base of operations in Sioux City.
In Sioux Falls— As of Saturday, March 16, the team has 200 flood cleanup kits available for anyone in need.
The Salvation Army's Camp Gene Eppley— Initial indications are that the property appears to be a total loss. Water levels have reached the roofs of the cabins and other buildings. Two Salvation Army employees who live at the camp have lost their homes there. For decades, this camp has been used year-round for various groups, programs and retreats; it is best known as a summer camp that hosts hundreds of students each year (nearly 700 in 2018 alone). Approximately 3,400 people in total were scheduled to use the camp this year.
