Major Merrill Powers was commissioned as an officer with The Salvation Army in 2001. Prior to entering the ministry, he worked in law enforcement, including positions as a police officer and probation officer. He has held several key positions within The Salvation Army, including Associate Director of the Chicago Harbor Light Center, and Corps Officer and Executive Director of the Chicago Harbor Light Center. He holds a BA in Management and Human Relations, a Master’s in Nonprofit Administration, and an MBA. Major Powers has a passion for lifelong learning and has taught in the Salvation Army’s Continuing Education Program.
After serving in various roles with The Salvation Army, Major Nancy Powers was commissioned as an officer in 2001. She specializes in homeless initiatives and substance use treatment. Before her officership, she was the founder and Executive Director of the Quincy Interfaith Sheltering Coalition, opening eight shelters. Major Nancy has been recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Quincy, and President Obama for her work in the community. She currently chairs the Commissioner’s Conference Task Force on the Opioid Crisis Response at The Salvation Army National Headquarters.
The Powers have been married for 39 years and have two grown children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Katy, works at the Chicago Harbor Light Center and is pursuing a degree in social work. Their son, Robert, lives in Florida with his wife and their two daughters. The Powers also have two dogs, Lacy, a goldendoodle, and Gizmo, a Yorkie.
In their personal lives, the Powers are passionate about BBQ, with their own team, The Powers of BBQ. They have cooked for large community events, including health fairs, Thanksgiving dinners, and staff appreciation events, serving over 700 people. Major Nancy is also a talented cake decorator and enjoys teaching others the craft. Major Merrill is an avid hunter and fisherman, although he has had less opportunity to practice since living in Chicago.
The Powers believe that serving God should be exciting and that showing His love through action is more important than words. They remain close to God through study, prayer, and devotion, and have a deep passion for evangelism, outreach, and service.
