4th Annual Donut Eating Contest

Jun 1, 2023

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The sweet aroma of freshly baked donuts filled the air as the Salvation Army of Kalamazoo kicked off the National Donut Day festivities a little early at Sweetwater's Donut Mill on Tuesday.

The event was a delightful blend of games, food, live music, and a tribute to donut history, leaving attendees with a sugar-coated smile.

The celebration served as a reminder of The Salvation Army's historical connection with donuts, dating back to World War I when Salvation Army Donut Lassies created and served donuts to the troops on the front lines in France, providing comfort and a taste of home.

"We are excited to have our 4th annual Donut Eating Contest this year," expressed Captain Ronnie Amick, Corps Officer for The Kalamazoo Salvation Army. "This is a fun event that highlights The Salvation Army's history with donuts and allows us to share everything we do throughout the year with the community."

The centerpiece of the celebration was a traditional donut eating contest, where participants had 10 minutes to devour as many donuts as possible. The winning contestant not only received a well-deserved trophy but also had the opportunity to create their favorite donut, which would be featured at Sweetwater's for the following week.

The National Donut Day celebration in Kalamazoo was a joyous occasion that brought the community together to indulge in delicious treats, enjoy live music, and pay homage to the rich history of donuts. It served as a reminder of The Salvation Army's mission and their commitment to serving the community throughout the year.
