Employee Spotlight - Jan Roberts
My name is Jan Roberts, and the reason why I work for The Salvation Army of La Porte Indiana, is because being a social worker at this corps has been a blessing to me. I look forward to going to work every day. Not many people can say that about their jobs. I have wonderful bosses that are willing to work alongside of you, always trying to be that team player even when situations are difficult. They are kind and treat others with respect. They are great pastors and believe in the mission of The Salvation Army, and they try their hardest to do what is right for our community. Another reason working here has meant so much to me is where can you go every day and help people that are in need of food, energy assistance, rent assistance, and more, and be able to give them hope and to make their day a better one, and for those who will allow you to, you can Freely Pray with them and allow them to feel the touch of Jesus, something that many may have never really felt. When you are serving these people that feel like there is no way out of their situation, and you are able to offer them a budget, assist in getting them a job, work alongside of the other organizations in our community, helping them with a life changing experience there is nothing more fulfilling within myself to see a smile on their faces maybe the first smile in many months or more. To see that family change little by little, to help to be that mentor for an entire family is the most rewarding feeling I could ever ask for at the end of the day. I enjoy visiting our soup kitchen and helping to reach out to those that come for our daily dinners. The soup kitchen is another outreach mission in our building that has many rewarding stories to look back on. Each one of these people has a unique way about them that makes them special to The Salvation Army and to the community they live in. Some of these people don't have money to go out and eat and so our soup kitchen serves as their special restaurant where they can bring their families and eat out. And once a month the Captains have movie & game night I find this so touching that they think about the soup kitchen group and help them to fit in even when they can't afford to go to a movie. Then I have the pleasure of being able to visit the seniors that are in our building every day, they also are very special and it touches me to be able to hear their stories and to pray with them when they are going through trials that may seem so unfixable, but again to share the love of Jesus with them makes their day so much better. The seniors know that we are there for them whenever they need us. These are just some of the reasons why I enjoy working for our Salvation Army. I pray every day on my way to work for Jesus to remove me and allow others to see him in me.
Always remember The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me. Matthew 25:40
This is my heart’s desire, to be a servant for others and to treat them the way Jesus would have.
