Holding the Red Shield

Jun 23, 2021

If the Salvation Army's Red Shield could talk, you would hear. . .

  • Of men and women experiencing poverty who are thankful for the financial support we provide through rent and utility bill assistance.
  • Of local families who are guided to self-sufficiency through our Pathway of Hope program.
  • Of our hungry neighbors who are grateful for the groceries they receive from our pantry.
  • Of struggling individuals in our community who come to The Salvation Army for hot meals, clothing, fellowship and help with basic needs.
  • Of Laura and David's answered prayers. . .

Laura and David were proud to be able to provide for their own family, as well as help The Salvation Army on a regular basis. They never suspected they'd actually need our help one day.

But at 3 a.m. one morning, they were huddled together with their two children in their neighbor's front yard. . . watching flames tear through their house. As firefighters rushed to the scene and calmed the raging fire, Laura and David were thankful nobody in their family was hurt. But they couldn't help thinking, "What are we going to do now?"

Before they could worry too long, a Salvation Army volunteer arrived to offer them hot coffee and blankets. Just having someone there made the family feel safe -- secure -- for the first time that night. The Salvation Army also provided the family with vouchers for food and a motel until other housing arrangements could be made.

That night Laura and David understood: You can hold the Red Shield or stand behind it. But there's no getting around the fact that it forms a protective barrier against elements that could harm you.

Here in the Lansing Capital Area, there's not a single life that isn't potentially touched by the Salvation Army.

Through a variety of programs and services, we bring comfort, relief, and encouragement to hundreds of men, women, and children every year.

Compassionate people like you have made The Salvation Army's Red Shield a strong, reputable symbol of hope -- for those receiving, as well as those giving. You can make a secure donation online today to support the Red Shield and all that it stands for.
