The Sweetest Volunteers!
7,384.
7,384. That's how many hours, despite a global pandemic, volunteers with The Salvation Army Lansing Capital Area contributed in 2020. Whether helping in our Food Pantry, handing out fresh produce to families, preparing take-out style meals for our community, or helping to #RescueChristmas, volunteers are the backbone of The Salvation Army and its mission.
In honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 19-23, 2021, we want to take a moment to give a heartfelt thank you to those who sacrifice their time and talents to make our community a better place. When many things were shut down and people were closed off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 279 of our volunteers continued to provide a helping hand. Jon Curtis, our Volunteer Coordinator who works to recruit, train, guide, and lead the volunteers, says, “I like working with our volunteers because it is refreshing being around people who want to give their time to help others in their community without expecting anything in return.”
The Salvation Army Lansing Capital Area's Coordinating Officer, Major Jim Irvine expressed his gratitude by sharing, "This past year when the COVID-19 pandemic isolated so many of us, none of us would be surprised to see a decline in both the number of volunteers and the number of volunteer hours completed. In spite of this trend, we have been blessed and our hearts filled with joy as we witnessed volunteers willingly take on prescribed safety measures to help The Salvation Army help people in need here in the Lansing Capital Area. More importantly, the hearts and spirits of those who received and those who gave help were blessed beyond measure! What a joy it is to see the scripture of 1 Peter 4:10 lived out: ‘As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.’”
Follow along, Monday, April 19-Friday, April 23, on Facebook and Instagram, as we celebrate the impact of our volunteers, and recognize 2020's top volunteers.
