We give kids their parents back

Our free programs provide the tools to treat the symptoms - and the root causes - of alcohol and drug dependence.

Every day in America, over 6,500 people are hospitalized for substance abuse.

That's 6,500 people - with moms, dads and kids - disrupted by the effects of addiction.

How we help combat addiction

Each year, the Harbor Light Center in Indianapolis helps more and more people to overcome alcohol and drug dependence.

Withdrawal Management/Detoxification Treatment The residential sub-acute detoxification program provides medical intervention 24-hours a day, seven days a week for individuals who are in acute physical distress as a result of their alcohol or drug abuse.  The Withdrawal Management/Detoxification unit is staffed with state licensed and certified nursing personnel and is supervised by a licensed physician. Upon admission to the Withdrawal Management/Detoxification unit, the nursing staff conducts a complete nursing assessment. The physician prescribes a medication regimen for the management of the clients withdrawal symptoms and health risks involved with the detoxification process. The length of stay is between 1-10 days determined by the type of substance used, amount used and the clients physical condition. Each client receives a clinical assessment in order to link the client with additional services after completion of the Withdrawal Management/Detoxification program.

Residential Treatment The Residential Treatment program offers a 28-day, 24-hour supervised living with highly structured addictions programming. The program consists of educational classes related to chemical dependency, and focuses on relapse and recovery skills.  Programming is designed to teach basic recovery and life management skills to increase the individuals ability to function effectively at home, work and socially. The Residential Treatment program is enhanced with social and recreational activities, on-site 12-step meetings, family education, HIV education and testing, individual, group and spiritual counseling.  Case management services link clients with community-based services to meet basic needs.  On-site drug testing is routinely conducted.

Transitional Housing/Ambassador Program The Transitional Housing-Ambassador Program provides affordable housing to adult men and women ages 18+ who are in need of temporary housing. The program offers two types of living quarters semi-private and dorm style rooms with different rates available. Transitional Housing-Ambassador Program is a FIVE-PHASE program-process of change and development.  Each phase is designed to help clients accomplish their goals and improve their overall success through structure accountability and tools for success. The goal of this program is to provide each individual with an opportunity to have a successful reintegration into the community by obtaining employment, private residence and/or community living. Each resident receives three meals, snacks, clean linen, access to an on-site computer lab and 12-step meetings.

Intensive Outpatient Program Intensive Outpatient Treatment services are designed to empower each client to remain abstinent from alcohol, drugs, and gambling. Services focus on improving psychological and social coping skills which result in the improvement in their quality of life. Intensive Outpatient services are a natural progression for those individuals who are stepping down from Withdrawal Management, Residential Treatment, or who have been diagnosed with a serious substance dependence problem. The program offers eight to sixteen (8-16) weeks of cognitive-based group sessions, meeting three (3) times a week for three (3) hours. Groups are offered during day and evening hours to increase accessibility for clients.

Problem Gambling Treatment Problem Gambling describes individuals whose gambling causes psychological, financial, emotional, marital, legal, or other difficulties for themselves and people surrounding them. Other addictive behaviors are commonly found with problem gamblers and may be contributing factors. Problem gamblers frequently experience problems with alcohol, drug abuse, and/or addictive sexual behaviors.  All persons entering The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center (SAHLC) for treatment services are assessed to determine the level of functionality and need for services.
