COMMUNITY COMPASSION & DONATIONS HELP THE SALVATION ARMY CHANNEL A TIDAL WAVE OF RECOVERY AID TO FOND DU LAC FLOOD VICTIMS

2,078 households were impacted by the March 14 flood. The Salvation Army continues case management and direct resource support at the frontline of relief assistance coordinated by FDL County Emergency Management.

Lucy Ridgeway is The Salvation Army caseworker who meets with flood victims, like Amber.  "The water just roared in," Amber shared. Her family of 6 escaped. The building that was their home, is now condemned. "We've lost everything."

Every situation is different. Some have been able to return to their dwelling; some still need transitional shelter while their residence gets cleaned up and inspected.  Flood damage has already necessitated that several housing complexes be condemned, displacing these renters until they are able to find new residences, put down a security deposit and first month’s rent and start totally over. In between, there’s a need for food, clothes, shelter, household and cleaning supplies, laundry and showers.

While each flood victim’s situation is different, their need is immediate.  The Salvation Army uses grant money from National Exchange Bank Foundation, Inc.,  Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, and Rosendale Lions Club and in-kind supplies from the community to deliver relief.

When Amber left The Salvation Army, she had a hotel room for her family to stay while she searched for a new home, food, a gas card to get from place-to-place and a Thrift Store voucher help them select necessities without charge.

“Households impacted by the flood we see have no insurance and no “fall back finances,”  Ridgeway says. “It’s help from the community that pulls them through. Thrift store donations will help them restock; food pantry donations will help replenish refrigerators, freezers, and pantries; laundry supply and toiletry donations will help those who use our laundry and showers; gas cards and bus passes you donate will help get them "get to and from" as they restock and replenish.”

Our door remains open and we’re here to help,” Major Jon Welch says, “The kindness community shares with us, helps us encircle flood victims in compassion and give them the strength to rebuild.”   For more information, go to www.safdl.org, visit The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac Facebook, or call 923-8220.
