PATHWAY OF HOPE: BREAKING THE CYCLE OF MULTI-GENERATIONAL POVERTY

The Pathway of Hope program provides individualized services to families with children. These families desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability that repeats generation after generation.

Sandra's Story

Sandra and her three children were homeless when they were referred to Pathway of Hope by the school district. They had been living in a motel and the funding had run out. Sandra and her family were placed in a rooming house while permanent housing was located. Within 1 week an affordable apartment, along with the funding was located to move in. Sandra has now found full-time employment with benefits and has enrolled to finish her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

A one-on-one case management mentoring program that guides a family through a crisis, sets goals and creates an environment where the family is confident in their ability to improve their future and thrive. There is no fee to families for this service.

A family in crisis with the desire and ability to commit to changing their circumstances is partnered with a professionally trained caseworker - mentor. They become a team. With regular meetings and lots of encouragement, the team:

  • Identifies the family’s immediate needs and provides targeted services to meet those needs
  • Defines the family’s “ideal outcome” (What are the ideal circumstances and environment you’d like to create for your family?);
  • Pinpoints each obstacle preventing the family from achieving self-sufficiency and happiness;
  • Problem-solves the solutions to overcome each obstacle;
  • Charts a step-by-step action plan that networks the right resource combination together to bring the family to their better future;
  • Follows the steps;
  • Creates the circumstances and environment the family will thrive in.

The program is available through The Salvation Army to qualifying families with:

  • At least one child under 18
  • The desire to improve their life circumstance
  • The determination to meet regularly, work hard, and follow-through

Stories from our participants

Liv and Kyle

Liv and Kyle were excited to start a family. Both knew they needed help to change the situation they were in to ensure their son would never have to go through what they have. Amber Arntz, Caseworker at The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac, remembers her first meeting with Kyle and Liv in April. “They were looking to get a fresh start on life, on the right foot."

Dorya

Dorya and her four children were homeless when they came to The Salvation Army on referral from a school principal.  Amber Arntz, a Caseworker at The Salvation Army met Dorya and was struck with her determination and desire to work hard, two key components to successful POH candidates. Amber provided an overview of the program and invited Dorya to a second meeting. When Dorya kept the next appointment, she demonstrated her willingness to do whatever was needed to create better circumstances for her family.
