The Shield of Caring program is closed for this program year. The program will reopen on Monday, January 16, 2023.
What is this program?
It is a way for families & individuals to receive emergency assistance and homeless prevention supportive services. The Salvation Army provides this by helping to pay natural gas utility bills, as well as providing for other basic needs that local community members may be in need of. It is all made possible by our partners at Nicor Gas, who have provided $5 million to our mission for the sole purpose of serving those hit hardest by the impacts of the pandemic. How does it work?
The partnership between Nicor & The Salvation Army is estimated to reach over 25,000 families as the Shield of Caring program build from the existing Sharing Program. Nicor residential customers who have an income that falls below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible to receive a grant worth $250, once every two years. This grant is applied to their account balances which are past due and a portion of these funds are also given to support The Salvation Army's programs which aim to meet basic needs such as emergency housing, support for food insecurity, case management, rental assistance, family services and much more!
