Providing physical needs such as grocery, utility and gift assistance,
to emotional experiences including holiday events and traditions.
The thought of a child not having a gift under the tree on Christmas morning, or a family unable to put a Christmas meal on their table to share together, is something we will fight to the bitter end. It is by Christ's love for us that we may share that love to others - especially during the holiday season where we celebrate is humble birth.
When a child receives a gift on Christmas morning because The Salvation Army was there to lend a helping hand, that child never forgets it. We want all of God's children to know that they are loved and are never forgotten.
Most people already associate The Salvation Army with the Christmas season. And while ringing bells and red kettles are an important, there is much, much more happening to brighten the holidays for those in need in Kankakee County.
Christmas Toy/Food Assistance
Individuals and families can apply for a holiday meal box, and toys are provided for children ages 12 and under. This year's applications are taking place November 26th-30th. Distribution will take place on December 20, 2018.
This program helps in collecting all of those much needed toys for families applying for holiday toy assistance. Local businesses host trees with Angel Tree tags that have information on toy donation ideas for local boys and girls. Donors "adopt" these Angels buy purchasing new toys and bringing them to The Salvation Army to be distributed to the families. Anyone can adopt an angel and give them the gift of a Christmas memory.
Community Cares Ministries
Visitation to local nursing homes during the holiday season is a tradition of The Salvation Army. The Officers/Pastors, church members, and volunteers bring gifts to the older adults, room-to-room, along with a warm smile and a lot of love. We sing carols, offer prayer, and spend quality time with the wonderful residents of these communities.
