NATIONAL SALVATION ARMY WEEK STARTS TODAY, LEADERS CALL FOR FOCUS ON POVERTY
National Salvation Army Week, established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, enters its 68th year with a focus on our neighbors facing poverty. The message is echoed in a proclamation issued by Governor Michael L. Parson, recognizing the week.
Columbia, Missouri -- Today marks the beginning of National Salvation Army Week, first recognized by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 and running each year from the second Monday in May through the following Sunday. From its inception, the week has been a reminder for Americans to give freely of themselves. Local leaders say they are calling on Mid-Missouri citizens to remember their neighbor facing poverty.
“The Salvation Army has a long tradition of serving those most in need, especially our neighbors facing poverty,” Mid-Missouri Coordinator Major Curtiss Hartley said. “We hope everyone will take the week to give special recognition to our neighbors facing poverty. There is so much we can do as individuals and as a community to help those in need.”
Governor Michael L. Parson issued a proclamation recognizing the week, listing among other things, “Whereas, The Salvation Army has been essential to Missouri by feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the needy, and befriending the lonely and afraid.”
