Release -- SALVATION ARMY OPENS CHRISTMAS PARADE REGISTRATION, HIGHLIGHTS POVERTY

Columbia, MO – For the second year, Columbia’s Salvation Army is hosting the community’s annual Christmas Parade, scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 19th, downtown on Broadway. The “Columbia Christmas Parade Against Poverty” is a free event for the entire community, with a reminder about those facing poverty.

The parade will start at E. Broadway and Hitt Street and end on Broadway at 4th Street. Online registration for parade entries and sponsors is available at www.comochristmas.com. Attendance is free and the entire community is invited.

“We expect this year’s parade to be even bigger and better than last year,” The Salvation Army’s Major Kevin Cedervall said. “We also want it to be a reminder about poverty in our community, and all proceeds will support our efforts to help those in need.”

KT Diamond Jewelers is the first to step up and is a presenting sponsor. Other sponsors will be added in the coming weeks, and parade entries are registering. An early bird discount to register will last until October 31st, when entry fees will increase.

The Salvation Army annually helps more than 23 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction and economic hardships through a range of social services. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need. In Columbia, The Salvation Army manages Harbor House, Boone County’s only homeless shelter serving adults with children, as well as men and women.They also run two thrift stores; a baby pantry; other services for people facing poverty; Columbia’s Christmas Parade; and local recognition of Unsheltered Persons’ Memorial Day.
