SALVATION ARMY RECOGNIZES ERICA DICKSON, FIRST “MAKING A DIFFERENCE” AWARD RECIPIENT
The local Salvation Army today announced a new program to recognize locals for “Making a Difference” in the community. The award will be issued several times throughout the year; the first recipient is Columbia Public Schools employee and community advocate Erica Dickson.
Getting to Know Erica -- 9 Questions
How would you describe yourself to a new friend? I would describe myself as transparent and honest. I am also extremely loyal.
What is something you would like people to know about you? I am currently in a place of transition. I am moving from doing many things that serve others well, to doing a few things that serve others and myself, really well.
What is a community issue you especially care about? In this season, I am super passionate about reproductive justice.
What is something fun on your bucket list that you want to make sure you do? I want to be able to travel more... travel longer... travel further.
What are you good at that might surprise people? I have been pretty good at sharing all of the things that I am good at with people, so I don't know that there is anything that would surprise folks.
What kind of kid were you? I was a pretty quiet kid, very observant. I was always watching the people and things happening around me... studying... taking it all in. I was usually the most chill one in my friend groups. I made pretty good grades in school, never really got in trouble.
Who is a personal hero of yours? I really admire the woman who trained us as doulas, and founded the Uzazi Village in Kansas City. Her name is Hakima Payne. She is a hero of mine personally and professionally. I have watched her display righteous anger in the areas of reproductive justice, and be respected for it. I have witnessed her unapologetically set boundaries for herself. She works diligently while prioritizing rest.
What is a guilty pleasure for you? FRENCH FRIES!!!
What do you wish you knew how to do? I am really trying to figure out how to do community and social justice work full-time... but, have all of the funds I need to see the world!!!
