SATURDAY, SALVATION ARMY TO KICK-OFF 1ST ANNUAL 5K RUN/WALK
This Saturday, the local Salvation Army will host what they intend to be an annual 5k run/walk, in memory of Pfc. Jason Fingar, KIA, Afghanistan, May 22nd, 2010. The event is dedicated to his memory and to all who have served and died in the name of freedom.
Columbia, Missouri – This Saturday at 8:30 am, the Jason Fingar Memorial 5K, will start in Flat Branch Park, 101 S. 4th Street, follow a route winding from downtown through the West edge of campus, ending where it started. Participants can still register at www.como5k.com or on-site on Saturday morning.
Cost to participate starts at $25 and all proceeds will benefit Salvation Army music programs. Columbia Public Schools students are invited to participate at no cost.
“Jason was actively involved with The Salvation Army from birth and it is an honor to hold this event in his name,” Major Kevin Cedervall, local Salvation Army coordinator, said. “We want to take this time to remember Jason’s sacrifice for all of us, along with so many others who have fought and died to protect our freedom.”
The Salvation Army annually helps more than 23 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction and economic hardships through a range of social services. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need. In Columbia, The Salvation Army manages Harbor House, Boone County’s only homeless shelter serving adults with children, as well as men and women.They also run two thrift stores; a baby pantry; other services for people facing poverty; Columbia’s Christmas Parade; and local recognition of Unsheltered Persons’ Memorial Day.
