Dec 7, 2023

In the charming town of Carbondale, Illinois, a heartening tradition unfolds each Christmas season, embodied by the unwavering spirit of Henry Stockton.

Henry Stockton and Collette Caplinger, Divisional Director of Service Extension Thrift Stores.

For 26 years, Henry, with his signature smile and infectious enthusiasm, has been a familiar sight, ringing his bell for The Salvation Army. This story not only celebrates his dedication but also illuminates the impact of his service.

In the streets of Carbondale, Henry's presence becomes a beacon of hope and joy. This year, he achieved a remarkable milestone, "Today I raised my highest one-day total for donations ever! I raised $405 today for The Salvation Army!" exclaimed Henry, his eyes sparkling with pride and accomplishment. This record-breaking collection is a testament to his commitment and the generosity of the Carbondale community.

Henry's journey with The Salvation Army began in a moment of reflection and purpose. "I believe that you do what the Lord sends you to do, and you do it with a smile," he shared.

Following his retirement, Henry sought a way to give back, leading him to The Salvation Army's doorstep. "Once upon a time, after retiring, I applied to bell ring, and The Salvation Army allowed me to get out and raise money for their services. This is something that I enjoy day after day," Henry recounted.

Raised with strong Christian values, Henry's faith has been the driving force behind his enduring commitment. "I was raised a Christian, and the Bible tells you to do unto others as you would have them do to you. That inspires me daily to ring the bell for the Salvation Army." His words resonate with the core values of The Salvation Army, emphasizing compassion, service, and the joy of giving.

“Henry has such a heart for the community of Jackson County. The funds he raises will support families and individuals in crisis who are at risk for loss of water, electricity, or propane or are at risk of eviction,” said Cami Horn, Social Services Manager at The Salvation Army of Southern Illinois. “He is a true beacon of hope in Southern Illinois.”

Henry's impact goes beyond the funds he raises; he has become a symbol of hope and community spirit. Parents with their children stop to drop coins into Henry’s kettle and express their gratitude for his presence. College students, local business owners, and passersby – are all drawn to his warm smile and the musical chime of his bell.

The funds Henry collects support The Salvation Army's numerous programs in the region, from providing meals and shelter to people in need to funding utility assistance programs. His efforts ensure that the spirit of giving extends throughout the year, touching lives in countless ways.

Henry’s impact on the local community is clear to see. His story, a blend of faith, service, and community, inspires all. It is a reminder that one person's dedication can ignite a chain of kindness, transforming the lives of many.

In Carbondale, Henry Stockton is not just a bell ringer but a guardian angel in disguise, a true embodiment of The Salvation Army's mission. He often says, "Every bell ring is a call to make a difference." And indeed, for 26 years, Henry Stockton has been making a difference, one ring at a time.
