Engaging the minds and bodies of older adults helps keep them young, active and happy. At The Salvation Army, someone?s grandparents can enjoy educational classes, kindle friendships over lunch, relive their youth with dances, take pre-retirement seminars and countless other activities.
Senior Citizens (55+) are the fasted-growing demographic in the United States. Because of this, The Salvation Army views the work they do for seniors to be amongst the most important work done. Each year, thousands of older adults are served through Salvation Army programs. In community centers, seniors gather to socialize, learn new skills and to have new experiences. Lunch programs, pre-retirement seminars, educational classes, faith and fellowship are all at the corps of our Senior Services. At Camp Mihaska, seniors are afforded the opportunity to enjoy nature and to commune with God in His beautiful creation. At our Booth Manor Senior Living Center, seniors can live in an atmosphere of love, acceptance and encouragement.
Of the many challenges that face those who are homebound, hospitalized or in a constant-care facility, feeling forgotten by the loss of contact with friends and family is the biggest. We offer Bible correspondence courses offer to those in prison, where those who are incarcerated can learn about the Bible. This service is offered in many languages. Additionally we connect prisoners with old-fashioned pen pals. You can help and encourage someone who may be hopeless by writing a letter now and then. Learn more about these ministries here.
As long as there has been a Salvation Army, there have been Salvation Army programs in place to honor those who have risked so much for our well-being. From offering doughnuts and other provisions on the front lines in WWII to offering long-term housing solutions to homeless veterans, The Salvation Army works daily to promote the military.
