What is your story? How did you end up in Milwaukee? Ian Abston

I was born in Elkhart Lake, went to school at UW-Oshkosh and landed my first job at Junior Achievement in Milwaukee.

What keeps you in Milwaukee/What do you like best about Milwaukee?

I love the people. I also love to create and build, and Milwaukee is very much an unfinished city. I feel like I can help shape the city that I love.

Favorite spot in the city?

My favorite spot is Nessun Dorma...you've never heard of it? That’s the point :)

Milwaukee festival you are eager to attend each year?

Brady Street Festival… so much weird.

What drew you to Echelon?

I have a long history with The Salvation Army. I got in a lot of trouble when I was in high school and had to do 40 hours of community service. I did it all one winter bell ringing and was shocked when people would stop by, put a few dollars in the bucket and tell me deeply personal stories of how The Salvation Army affected their lives. In college I applied for a job running The Salvation Army Family Store in Oshkosh and loved it.

Share with us a memorable experience you have had thus far with the organization.

900-foot water slide ripping through the middle of the city :)

What struggles do you see our city dealing with? What can our generation do to help?

A city is only as strong as its weakest link. The Salvation Army helps those when they need it most, and that’s why I love it so much. To help, our generation needs to pick at least one organization they love, and own it. If everyone did that, got involved in just one thing with as much passion as you have when you cheer for the Packers, we'd transform Milwaukee in a moment.
