The Salvation Army To Participate In Milwaukee's Juneteenth Day Parade

MILWAUKEE COUNTY - The Salvation Army will participate in Milwaukee's 56th Annual Juneteenth Day Parade and Festival on Tuesday, June 19.

Juneteenth Day, which dates back to 1865, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

"At the parade, members of The Salvation Army's Chaplaincy Program will be riding in our canteen (mobile kitchen) and passing out candy for children," said Major Steve Merritt, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army of Wisconsin & Upper Michigan. "We will also sponsor face painting activities at the festival."

This year's parade steps off at 10 a.m. from 19th Street and Atkinson Avenue. It will then proceed to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Burleigh Street (map attached).

The festival, which will feature musical performances and numerous vendors, will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Center and Burleigh Streets.

About The Salvation Army Chaplaincy Program:
The Chaplaincy Program is a partnership between The Salvation Army Milwaukee County and the Milwaukee Police Department. The chaplains are called to critical incidents when police determine emotional and spiritual care is needed, including: homicides, drug overdoses, house fires, fatal accidents and suicides.

About The Salvation Army:
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination since 1865. Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. The Salvation Army tracks the level of need across the country with the Human Needs Index (Human NeedsIndex.org). Locally, 87 cents of every dollar raised is used to support programs and services in Milwaukee County.
