A Path Out of Poverty Image

A Path Out of Poverty

We offer both short-term solutions and long-term strategies to help people in need.

Poverty Isn't Just an Urban Problem

Poverty affects rural Americans, too. More than 13 percent of residents in Mitchell and the surrounding area live below the federal poverty line.

Poverty can be isolating. Those who suffer often feel alone. We are here to provide community, help and hope.

How We Help Overcome Poverty

Rent, Utilities and Material Assistance
No one should ever have to choose between heating their home during the frigid winter months and putting food on the table. That's why we help low-income individuals and families close the gap by helping pay rent or a utilities bill when there is a financial shortfall. We also provide clothing and household goods to people in need.

Emergency Gas Assistance and Lodging
Sometimes an individual or a family in a crisis situation can find themselves with nowhere to turn. We provide emergency lodging in local motels and gas assistance to help get those struggling through an immediate crisis and to a place of greater stability.

Back-to-School Supplies and Cozy Coats for Kids
The cost of new school supplies and clothing can add up quickly. As a result, families living within a limited budget often find the back-to-school season particularly challenging. We help kids get what they need, including clothing and outerwear, to start the school year off on the right foot. We also offer coats to adults in need starting in the fall.

Christmas Assistance
Because the holidays can put an even greater strain on an already-tight budget, we provide food baskets and toys through our Angel Tree program at Christmastime to families in need.

Food Programs
Hunger is one of the most crushing effects of poverty. We offer a weekday lunch program and a food pantry to help struggling individuals and families close the hunger gap. Learn more about how we help cure hunger.

Pathway of Hope
The goal of Pathway of Hope is to guide families with children 18 years and younger through crisis and instability to a place of security in order to ultimately break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. We offer strengths-based casework, providing services such as:

  • financial counseling and planning
  • goal setting with manageable action steps
  • job training, referrals and employment assistance
  • assistance with securing housing and child care
  • emotional and spiritual support

Pathway of Hope works with people where they are, offering practical guidance to help families overcome obstacles one step at a time.
