Providing housing takes an Army Image

Providing housing takes an Army

We focus on both prevention and provision.

Last winter, there were 740 visits to the White Flag Shelter.

No one likes to think of their neighbor, friend, or even family member sleeping on the street.  Yet, it happens.  Right here in our community.

Call 812-913-5220 to find out if the shelter is open.

The shelter opens when it is less than 35 degrees for at least 4 hours. The decision to open is announced by 12 PM each day. Call the hotline to verify shelter services.

Prevention

Our first hope in providing housing is to help pay rent in order to prevent eviction and homelessness.  This can be applied for at SAHelp.org.  Call 812-944-1018 with questions.

White Flag Shelter

We know that there are times when people find themselves with no place to go. The Salvation Army partners with the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana to provide a White Flag Shelter which is located at Culberston Baptist Church 4007 Grant Line Rd, New Albany IN. When the weather gets cold, we want to make sure everyone has a warm place to spend the night.  The White Flag Shelter is open when the temperatures are below 35 degrees for at least 4 hours between November 15 and April 15.

Guests are welcomed with a cot or mattress, blanket, pillow, and snack.  They have access to warm showers and are given a sack lunch for the day.  Hours of operation are 7 AM to 7 PM.  Guests cannot be registered sex offenders or display behavior that indicates they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

For questions or more information about the White Flag Shelter, please contact the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana.
