Annual Civic Luncheon Features Chicago Cubs Owner Tom Ricketts
Tom Ricketts, Chicago Cubs owner, will be the featured speaker at The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division’s annual Civic Luncheon on Tuesday, May 8th at the Hilton Chicago.
The annual Civic Luncheon celebrates a year of service delivered to the most vulnerable men, women and children throughout Chicago and the suburbs, and recognizes the generous donors whose dedicated support makes those services possible. Every year the Army recognizes some of its most dedicated supporters, and this year will recognize Ernest and Theresa Sawyer, and the City of Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS).
The Sawyers will be presented with the William Booth Award in recognition of their generous support of The Salvation Army. They've been involved with the Army for more than a decade, supporting major campaigns including for the Ray & Joan Kroc Center. Ernest has also served on the Chicago Advisory board since 2006, helping to identify new board members and preparing the organization for the future.
The City of Chicago's DFSS is being presented with the "Others" Award for its work to eradicate homelessness. DFSS partnered with the Army to create the new Shield of Hope facility, the nation's first rapid-response homeless center designed to quickly move families into more stable situations.
Ricketts is the Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs and longtime fan of the team. In 2009, he led his family's acquisition of the team from the Tribune Company. When Tom and his family were introduced as the new owners of the Chicago Cubs, he outlined three goals for the organization: win the World Series; preserve and improve Wrigley Field for future generations; and to be good neighbors, giving back to the city and the team's North Side neighborhood.
