After-School Program

The SAL ASP

ASP in-person registration for the

2024-2025 school year will open June 3!

Registration stays open until we reach our capacity.

After school can be a tough time for students. Students can either get involved in an after-school activity or search for something to do, often ending up playing video games, watching TV, or just being bored. Our After-School Program offers an alternative. We pick students up from Oak Ridge Elementary, Northwood Elementary, and ROMS and take them to The SAL. While there, they receive a snack, homework time, structured activities and sometime just for hanging out in a safe supervised environment.

For more information or to sign up please contact Jeff Rowland at 248 585 5600 ext. 672 or Jeff.Rowland@usc.salvationarmy.org

Frequently Asked Questions

It's basically a tutoring and latchkey program for Royal Oak Middle School, Northwood Elementary, and Oak Ridge Elementary. This program will bus students from school to the SAL Community Center located at 3015 N. Main (2 blocks south of 13 mile). Once at The SAL students will enjoy a snack, homework time and structured/supervised activities from after school until 6pm or until they can be picked up by their parents.

No. ASP is broken into three semesters. However, we do ask that you clarify the semesters desired on the registration form.

The cost of the program is based on how many school days are in the month. Daily rates are available for a semester up request. The program will NOT be open if Royal Oak Schools are closed. See the registration form above for monthly fees. Please note that there may be 1/2 days that The SAL will be closed. We may try and provide care for at least one 1/2 day.

If you have not picked up your child by 10 minutes past 6:00 pm there will be a $10 late fee and $1 a minute fee after that. Late fees must be paid within (2) days of the incident for the child to return to the program.

The Salvation Army is on Main St. (2 blocks south of 13 mile). The After School Program is run out of the Community Center located on the north side of the building. There is a green awning with "The SAL" on it. Please enter through these doors after 4:30pm. If you are arriving before 4:30pm you will need to enter through the main office on the south side of the building.

Register from 8:30am- Noon or 1pm-4:30pm in the main office. A $25 registration fee will need to be paid at registration. Monthly payments will be paid on the 1st open Monday of that month. Registration will continue until we have hit our maximum capacity.

Yes. The Royal Oak Salvation Army will need WRITTEN notice informing us of the change no less than 30 days prior to the cancellation or all deposits will be forfeited.

Yes. The Salvation Army is a church and there will be posters, materials and information throughout the building that would normally be found in a church. Programs and activities, such as recreational games, homework time, etc. will serve the purpose for which they were established. There will be areas, such as prayer before snack and daily devotions that students will be asked to participate in that have a faith-based component.

The program will run at a 10-1 student to staff ratio. All staff will have gone through a 3 tier background check, CPR certification and First-Aid Training (all Red Cross certified). The After-School Program is a State of Michigan Licensed program.

The SAL will follow the code of conduct that the Royal Oak schools follow. Example: If a child is not allowed to wear certain clothes at school, they can not wear those clothes at the SAL. The same goes for bullying, profanity, vandalism, etc...

The students will go through rules for the program every Monday as a group.

Counselors and staff will assist your child with homework assignments and check planners.

Please call the SAL's main office at 248.585.5600 or email Jeff Rowland at Jeff.Rowland@usc.salvationarmy.org as soon as you know your child will not be coming. This makes school pick-up run smoothly.

Please give us an email account or phone/txt number that is readily checked in case of an emergency or other information that needs to be sent out in a timely manner.
