The Desk That Saved Christmas

Oct 13, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has been arduous for families with school-aged children, and Ann’s* family is no exception. Ann’s husband lost his job due to the pandemic, and the family struggled as 2020 continued on. By the time the holiday season came, the immigrant family, who had been generally self-sufficient in their last several years as new US citizens, was in financial straits. Ann decided to call The Salvation Army Royal Oak Corps Community Center after seeing an advertisement.

“I was in an office somewhere, but I don’t really remember where I saw it exactly,” says Ann. “But I knew we needed help, so I decided to reach out.”

Ann met with the Royal Oak caseworker and went through the family’s needs. At the top of the list: a desk and chair for her oldest daughter, who was attending high school virtually.

“She didn’t have an adequate workspace,” recalls Ann. “The Salvation Army gave us so much help – Christmas toys, clothes, kitchen supplies, food – but what really stunned us was that they came through with a desk! I was thrilled to see my children receive the help they needed.”

This year, Ann plans on seeking holiday assistance from The Salvation Army again. “Your help meant a lot to us, because we not only had our needs met, but we also had a great holiday because of the assistance we received. We are so grateful for that.”
