The Salvation Army Traverse City announces Free Food Market

May 5, 2021 Traverse City, MI:  The Salvation Army is pleased to announce the addition of a Free Food Market to their food and feeding programs. The Free Food Market is held in the parking lot at The Salvation Army Community Center at 1239 Barlow St., Traverse City, weekly on Monday and Wednesday from noon-1pm for anyone in need.

The food market includes; produce, meat, eggs, bakery items, basic non-perishable items, as well as limited hygiene, and cleaning items. Selection and items vary each day.

In partnership with Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan, Northwest Food Coalition, and the generosity of the community, the food market provides fresh, healthy items to our neighbors who are struggling.

Patricia Steele, Social Service Coordinator said, “The program is all about community. Generously donated gifts by the community…given back to the community! We have been hearing from our guests what a difference it makes to their budget as well as the appreciation of the selection of healthy food items. They enjoy the experience and are comfortable with the program being outside.”

Guests can also get a hot meal for themselves and their families at the same time from the Community Meal program that continues to provide To-Go meals Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon – 1 at the Salvation Army Community Center. This also opens the door for community members to learn more and connect with additional services including utility, rental, and emergency needs assistance, youth programs, emotional and spiritual care, and more.

In addition to the Free Farm Market and Community Meals, the Salvation Army food pantry is available by appointment on Monday and Thursday by calling 231.946.4644.

The food market and food pantry are accepting the donation of basic hygiene and cleaning products to help not only feed the hungry but to promote healthy bodies.

Donations appreciated:

Hygiene: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, liquid or bar soap,  shampoo/conditioner, hand cream, sanitizer, shaving cream and razors.

Cleaning items:  Spray cleaners, glass cleaner, dish soap, laundry soap, toilet bowl cleaner, furniture polish, and sponges.
