Evening and Sunday Program Theme

“I wonder if…” is the theme of our evening and Sunday programs during the Central Bible Leadership Institute.

Evening programs will encourage the audience to ignite creativity and introduce innovation in their ministries and personal lives as people pursuing the mission of The Salvation Army, “to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in his name without discrimination.”

Unless noted with an (*), all CBLI programs are open to visitors.

Mike Donahue

CBLI welcomes Mike Donahue, executive director and founder of R5 Productions(dedicated to reaching to and enriching the lives of young people), and author (Reinventing My Normal, Hidden Scars, Talking to Brick Walls).  Mike is one of the most sought after speakers in the USA on the subject of respect, bullying, and diversity.

Mike says his life mission is to help young people find the answer that is already inside of them. And, to help them find the courage to face whatever it is that is holding them back from experiencing greatness. He has spent the last 25 years working hand in hand with young people all over the world, helping them to find purpose and define themselves as they navigate the difficult transition from child to adult.   CBLI is pleased to have Mike as our special guest Tuesday evening.

Linda Himes

Linda Himes has served in various ministries in the Salvation Army for most of her adult life. She has always had a strong passion for the word of God and looks for any opportunity to share that passion. Linda worked for two years with Precept Ministries in Chattanooga, TN, teaching people an inductive way of studying the bible. Out of her concern that Christians are told they should study the bible, but we are not told how to, Linda became a trainer for Precept Ministries. She travels throughout North America teaching bible studies, and sharing her love of scripture. Linda worships in the Salvation Army at the Oakbrook Terrace Corps in Chicago. She is married to Bill Himes and they have two married children and two grandchildren.

Christine Giffey-Brohaugh

Christine Giffey-Brohaugh and her husband Christopher are retired Salvation Army officers living in Wisconsin. For 20 years they served as officers in the Northwest Division of the USA Western Territory.  Christine has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and it was that degree that led her and Christopher to the Army many years ago.  It was the one place they found where faith had hands and feet.  After her retirement Christine has pursued a Master’s Degree in Biblical Counseling.  Currently she has an active counseling practice and works as a consultant with The Salvation Army.  The Giffey-Brohaugh’s have two adult daughters and one in high school.

Major Jim Garrington

As Jim Garrington’s alcoholic grandfather went one evening from bar to bar, he happened upon the local Salvation Army holding a street meeting. That night he gave his life to Jesus Christ, and never drank again as long as he lived. Thus came the Garrington family to the Army.

Jim grew up in an alcohol free family, but during his work with addicts realized that he himself evidenced most of the characteristics of an addict, except that he did not actually use the substances.  In September 1976, after completing the Army’s Officer training program in Chicago, he and his wife Judy were transferred to Germany.

Jim and Judy led Army churches and social institutions in six German cities, most recently Dresden in the formerly Communist East Germany, as well as the Omaha und Milwaukee Citadel Corps in the USA. They currently work as “Pastors to the Pastors,” offering pastoral support to Salvation Army officers in the 11 states of the Midwest.  Jim has degrees in German and Missions, the latter earned at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City.  The Garringtons have three children, all born in Germany:  Jamie, who leads a Corps in Chemnitz in Germany, Jodi, who teaches English to small children in Taiwan, and Joshua, an engineer in Manitowoc, WI (and Sergeant-Major of the Manitowoc Corps).  Josh and his wife Heather have two children, Lili and Phineas, ages 5 and 3, and Jamie's first child is the newest addition to the Garrington’s grandchildren.
