Tuesday morning, the Salvation Army took hundreds of local students back-to-school shopping at the Brentwood Target store.
The Salvation Army knows how to get kids excited about going back to school. Cash registered beeped and kids showed off their haul during a shopping spree.
“Pens, socks, t-shirts,’ second-grader Jayden Nicholson ran down his now-complete list.
“There’s always a child in need,’ pointed out Salvation Army Major Patty Richardson. ‘Target is partnering with us. They’ve provided some gift cards for 300 kids here in Missouri and Illinois.”
So volunteers from Bank of America, U.S. Bank and all over the metro helped kids spend their $80 gift cards on back-to-school necessities.
“Just letting kids know, ‘You know what? There are still people who really care about me.`’ Richardson explained. ‘ They don’t have to know me, but they still care about me.”
Cameron Nicholson admits his budget is not growing along with his oldest son Jayden.
“He wears a size 7 now, as far as shoes and everything.’ Nicholson said. ‘So, things are getting real expensive. I just guess it is a part of them growing up.”
Mr. Nicholson stood in the fray of kids, parents and volunteers. He said he was only 16, when Jayden was born. Seven years later, the dad said he is excited this jump-start to the school year.
“Thank you very much,’ he looked around at all the volunteers. ‘That’s the main thing, just saying thank you for just helping us. Any type of help is good.”
Salvation Army volunteers already started planning another shopping spree for Christmas. Until then, the agency provides tutoring and after-school programs for area kids.
