Bell Ringer Sign-Up Is Underway

Oct 26, 2022

Every Salvation Army red kettle needs a bell ringer—a person who stands nearby and encourages others to give a little for their neighbors in need during the Christmas season. It’s a very important but humbling role that began in 1891 when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee put out a crab pot to collect donations to provide a free Christmas dinner to the destitute and poverty stricken in San Francisco.

Since then, individuals, families, churches, businesses, and many other groups, have incorporated bell ringing into their holiday activities. They give back to others by carrying on this time-honored tradition of helping those who are less fortunate. The donations are used to fund a variety of Salvation Army services and program in the community.

Bell ringer sign-up is now open, and volunteers are needed across The Salvation Army Central Territory. Getting started is easy! All scheduling takes place online at www.registertoring.org. In just a few minutes, you can create an account and select the location, day and time that works best for your schedule.

Following your shift, you can even log back in and find out how much money was raised at your red kettle. This is a helpful feature when organizing a group of volunteers from the same company or church. It can encourage friendly competition and team building when everyone is working towards a common goal.

All of the money placed in The Salvation Army red kettles remains in the community in which it was donated. So neighbors are truly helping one another. The Salvation Army hopes that anyone who is struggling and hears the bells ringing at Christmastime will be reminded that hope is on the way.

Please check your calendar and sign up for a shift or two. Take this opportunity to show others they are loved at Christmas and beyond. www.registertoring.org.
