Happiness at Work
“It's been such a joy being part of The Salvation Army, and I'll be honest, I have never experienced anything like this working in other jobs,” said Eric Fenn, Director of Social Services Data Solutions for The Salvation Army Central Territory.
For six years, Fenn has worked behind the scenes establishing software vendor relationships. He is responsible for identifying ways to expand and increase the effectiveness of case management, contracts, and Christmas database programs within the Social Services Department. Additionally, he ensures that training methods are standardized so all users throughout the territory will be successful in their roles.
“I worked in corporate IT from 2000 until I was hired by The Salvation Army. While it was very rewarding to create new things and see them through to completion, it was extremely fast paced. I had to put out a lot of fires which made my life very stressful,” he said. “Working here is a much better fit.”
Fenn felt something important was missing in his career. As a Christian who keeps God very central in his life, his desire to have a positive impact on people presented itself after talking to a friend at the Indiana Division of The Salvation Army.
“She encouraged me to look at the job openings online, and that’s when I saw a position for a senior systems administrator. I thought, well, this is an opportunity I'd be willing to look at a little more closely—and then I applied. I was surprised by how smoothly and quickly the hiring process went. I had been praying about having a more rewarding career and God answered my prayers,” he said.
Activities that take place in the Central Territory Social Services Department have a direct impact on clients across the Midwest, since they are responsible for looking at the big picture and working with divisions to help establish what is needed in the field. This is accomplished through the collaboration of several departments that work closely together.
“It’s fun to see how we are all connected to support the mission of The Salvation Army. We may have different responsibilities and goals, but we’re all part of the same team,” said Fenn.
