Make Holiday Magic: Adopt From an Angel Tree

Nov 17, 2023

The Salvation Army has officially kicked off the holiday season with the opening of adoptions for the Angel Tree, the high-profile Christmas tradition that provides help and hope for families and individuals in need. With so many people struggling due to inflation and rising costs, this is one way for community members to partner with us and show others that love exists beyond the most difficult situations.

Across the Midwest, people are faced with tough decisions about how to stretch their already tight household budgets. Many are torn between purchasing presents for the holidays or putting food on the table. The Angel Tree program helps alleviate that added financial and emotional stress. It’s an easy way for people to anonymously help their neighbors this time of year.

Angel Tree adoptions take place in two ways. The first one is to select a gift tag from an Angel Tree display set up at a local store, shopping mall, businesses, or church. Each tag lists the first name, age, and gender of the recipient, and the gifts they need. Items may include new clothes, toys, shoes, sports equipment, and essential hygiene/personal care products.

Generous donors purchase the gifts and drop off the unwrapped items (including the gift tag!) by the deadline provided. The gifts are then transported to a Salvation Army Christmas Distribution Center for sorting and organizing, which takes place with the help of many volunteers. Angel Tree families are invited to pick up their items approximately seven days prior to Christmas Eve.

Another way to adopt an Angel is to visit the online Angel Tree registry through Walmart. You can browse the items listed and purchase gifts for children and seniors, located anywhere in the U.S., from the comfort of your home. Just add your zip code and find The Salvation Army nearest you. Then put the gifts you would like to purchase in your shopping cart and check out. Items can be shipped directly to The Salvation Army Christmas Distribution Center where they will be processed alongside the other gifts.

We need your help spreading joy on Christmas morning and beyond! To learn about the year-round programs and services offered by your local Salvation Army, or discover ways you can help this holiday season, enter your zip code here.
