For many Milwaukee-area children, being out of school for the summer can also mean going hungry. On Monday, June 17th, the Salvation Army launched its “Feed the Kids Summer Lunch Program.”

The program kicked off at Red Arrow Park on Monday afternoon.

FOX6′s Chip Brewster was among the volunteers putting together 1,500 bag lunches.

“We’ll distribute these tomorrow and we’ll have 1,500 children out there who get the sandwiches. We want to make sure they get a good, nutritious, tasty meal,” Major Roger Ross with the Salvation Army said.

Now through August, volunteers will assemble the lunches — almost 2,000 meals a day, Monday through Friday.
