Fighting Poverty One Step at a Time

Approximately 13 percent of South Dakota residents fall below the federal poverty level, which is just over $24,000 for a family of four.

Poverty is pervasive, but it doesn’t have to be permanent.

We Meet Short- and Long-term Needs

Emergency help, like rent and utilities assistance, and seasonal services, like our back-to-school program, offer immediate solutions for difficult seasons. For those enduring the intergenerational cycle of poverty, Pathway of Hope provides an array of services and caseworker support to families in need.

How We Help Overcome Poverty

Emergency Rent and Utilities Assistance
A person shouldn't have to choose between feeding their children and paying their rent, but sadly, this is often the kind of choice faced by people living in poverty.

Every year we help more than 3,000 individuals in the Watertown area make ends meet by providing material assistance such as household items, clothing and furniture, as well utilities, rent and mortgage assistance.

Back-2-School Giveaway
Outfitting kids with backpacks and supplies each fall can put a financial strain on low-income families. That's why at the end of every summer we host the Back-2-School Giveaway when collected donations of school supplies are distributed to families in need. Our goal is to ensure that every child has the tools he or she needs to start the school year off right.

Pathway of Hope
Pathway of Hope is a casework approach that provides targeted services to families in need with children age 18 and younger in Codington County and the surrounding area. This program strives to help families break the cycle of financial and other crises and begin a path out of intergenerational poverty. It is built on the premise that the strengths-based approach, combined with hope enhancement, can help at-risk families overcome barriers and progress toward stability and self-sufficiency.

Our team works to build community for Pathway families, enabling them to connect with Salvation Army programs and community resources. We offer strengths-based casework, providing services such as:

  • financial counseling and planning
  • goal setting with manageable action steps
  • job training, referrals and employment assistance
  • assistance with securing housing and childcare
  • emotional and spiritual support

Pathway of Hope works with people where they are, offering practical guidance to help families overcome obstacles and achieve their big-picture goals one step at a time.
