VOLUNTEER TO RING BELLS FOR THE SALVATION ARMY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Community members can help The Salvation Army of Elkhart make sure that Hope Marches On this Christmas season by signing up to become a volunteer bell ringer. Registrations to ring the organization’s iconic bells are open and can be done by visiting RegisterToRing.com.
This year, 10 sites in Elkhart County need volunteers to sign up for two-hour shifts. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to register. Bell ringing runs until Christmas Eve.
“Like many employers in our community, we are struggling to find enough bell ringers,” Elkhart Corps Officer Lieutenant Wayne Benedict said. “The red kettles in front of stores remind us of the holiday season and our chance to give back. We need the community to come alongside of us and help by volunteering.”

The red kettles are an essential component to The Salvation Army’s annual Tree of Lights Campaign and help to bring awareness to the needs of the community. The goal of this year’s Tree of Lights Campaign is to raise $515,000. All money collected at kettles and during the Tree of Lights Campaign support The Salvation Army of Elkhart’s year-round programs and services.
The red kettle tradition began in 1891 as a way for Captain Joseph McFee of The Salvation Army to provide funds for a Christmas dinner for those who were poverty stricken in San Francisco. Throughout the world, public contributions to red kettles enable The Salvation Army to continue its year-round efforts at helping those in need.
