On Thursday, June 1, The William Booth Legal Aid Clinic (WBLAC) hosted its first default clinic since the start of the pandemic at the Detroit Harbor Light Center.

Named after Salvation Army founder William Booth, WBLAC provides legal services to low-income clients based on the belief that access to exceptional legal services for all members of society is vital to free society.

On the first Thursday of every month, WBLAC helps clients struggling in the court system complete their default paperwork.

When a party files a court action and the other side doesn’t participate, a party must default their opposing party to complete their case and have a final judgment entered.

The clients that came to WBLAC on Thursday were referred to it by the court.  If a litigant shows up to court without the correct paperwork to complete their case, the court is unable to help them.

Were they not referred to WBLAC, these litigants would not be able to achieve their goals and their case would likely be dismissed. This would perpetuate a cycle that prevents some from leaving abusive marriages, dangerous living situations or being taken advantage of.

WBLAC prepares all the necessary court pleadings for the client and files them so when the client returns to court, the court can grant their judgment and the litigant is able to achieve their goals.

If you would like to help the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic continue this important service, donations are appreciated. Your help could help rescue individuals stuck in the frustrating court system get back their lives.
