Every day The Salvation Army helps cure hunger by providing nutritious meals to neighbors in need.
The Salvation Army works to ensure that every member of our community has the food they need to thrive. If you face hunger, we want you to know that you are not alone.
Food Assistance is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with no appointment needed. Picture Id's (driver's license, passport, government issued ID, etc) are required.
Lunch Bunch Feeding Program
This feeding program offers a free meal three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, commencing with prayer at 11:30 AM. The fun, food and fellowship of this program are contagious; those who attend find support, faith in action, and a meaningful experience around the table. Many who attend find not only a meal, but also hope restored.
"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me in" (Matthew 25:35).

Through the grace of God and the generosity of others in our community, we are able to offer grocery assistance to those in need. Recipients receive a week's worth of groceries, based on the number of persons in their household. We are able to offer such assistance four times a year, with at least 30 days between each visit as a general rule.
To receive assistance recipients must do the following:
Present at The Salvation Army between 9:00 am and 11:00 am or 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
Have with them an up-to-date picture id for the head of household (driver's license, passport, greencard, government issued ID, etc.)
Have with them a form of ID for everyone living in the house (birth certificate, Medicaid card, government issued ID, etc.)
Reside in our service area
Meet with a staff member for a brief intake assessment before receiving assistance.

Feeding His Sheep Backpack Program
The Salvation Army of Niles is continuing a new initiative called Feeding His Sheep. The goal of this backpack outreach program is to provide balanced, nutritional meals to elementary children in our area over the weekends. Many children benefit from school meal programs throughout the week days. However, in these difficult economic times, we recognize that some families may be challenged to meet this need over the weekend. Our aim is to help children receive good nutrition, develop healthy eating habits and, in the process, help them have better attendance and academic performance. We believe this outreach can be a valuable tool in our children's scholastic achievements.
Children are selected to participate in this program by the professionals at the school that he/she attends. To maximize the success of this program requires parental participation and consent. The program is simple and works in this way; each Friday the child will receive at school a red backpack filled with breakfast, lunch and dinner components for Saturday and Sunday. To continue to participate, children must return the red backpack to the school each Monday morning. This is not only appreciated but essential for their continuation in the program. Also, periodically included in the backpacks will be helpful information in the areas of health, nutrition and/or enrichment
