PETOSKEY HARBOR SPRINGS AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS THE SALVATION ARMY TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS TO FEED OUR COMMUNITY

February 1, 2019, Petoskey, MI- The Salvation Army received a $10,000.00 grant from the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Fund for the Community, Erickson Family Fund, and Ann K. Irish Charitable Fund to continue its efforts by providing weekly Friday Night Live Community Dinners as well as monthly Addiction Recovery Support Dinners and Meetings.

Friday Night Live Community Dinners are open to the public every Friday, 52 weeks per year at 6 PM.  They allow low-income individuals and families, homeless, and elderly to have a hot meal surrounded by others who care and talk with them without prejudice. Seniors benefit additionally through social interaction which is known to help prevent Dementia. Access to the Salvation Army’s pantry is also available during the dinners for people who work during the pantry’s regular hours of operation.

Addiction Recovery Support Dinners and Meetings are held every third Thursday evening at 6 pm and are available to anyone recovering from addictions. The dinners allow individuals to gain support from peers while sharing a friendly meal. Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings follow the meals to reinforce goals of staying sober and promote healthy lifestyles.

Envoy, Greg Irwin says “Our Community Dinners are so much more than making sure our neighbors aren’t going to bed hungry. Many of those who come to our dinners need kindness, fellowship, and acceptance just as much as they need nourishment. Just a kind word or a heartfelt conversation can make all the difference in the world to a lonely senior or homeless individual who attends”.

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the Universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
